OUR STORY

FROM OUR GRAIN, TO YOUR GLASS

Loup River Distilling was founded in 2016 by Eric and Maria Montemagni as a way to bring added value to their family-grown Nebraska corn and showcase the quality of local agriculture. Rooted in the Loup River Valley, the distillery embraces a true “grain-to-glass” philosophy—growing the grain, crafting the spirits, and sharing the final product in a welcoming tasting room. Eric, a third-generation farmer with a degree in agronomy and Master Level II distiller certification, blends his lifelong farming experience with extensive distilling research and industry involvement to produce high-quality, corn-based spirits that reflect Nebraska’s agricultural heritage.

Maria contributes her expertise in customer service, education, and food safety, helping shape the warm, community-focused atmosphere that defines the Loup River experience.

In 2022, Loup River Distilling welcomed new ownership with the leadership of Dirk Petersen, Terry Rasmussen, and Andrew McCarthy. In 2025, Dirk became sole owner.  Like Eric, Dirk’s roots also run deep in Nebraska agriculture. Born and raised on a farm outside Wisner, Nebraska, Dirk carries forward the values of hard work, stewardship, and community that shaped his upbringing. After a successful career working for Nucor Steel, he brings his leadership experience, a passion for Nebraska-grown products, and a commitment to helping the distillery continue to grow while staying true to its roots.

Loup River Distilling, under the leadership of Dirk and the Montemagni family, is committed to using local products, honoring tradition, and creating spirits that customers can enjoy both in the tasting room and at home. Each bottle is crafted with care—from their grain, to your glass.
